Suzanne Chester

Senior Attorney and Founder

Child's Voice Law

Suzanne, a graduate of UNC Law School, has over thirty years of experience practicing family law, domestic violence, prisoner rights, fair housing litigation, and children’s advocacy. Early in her career, she began representing adults in child custody and domestic violence matters through Legal Aid of North Carolina. More recently, Suzanne directed The Child’s Advocate for over a decade, where she and her team were appointed by the Court to represent children in tough custody cases. Suzanne has extensive experience with the challenges that confront divorcing or separated parents who may be struggling with parenting their children. This includes children with special needs, parent-child contact problems, LGBTQ youth and their needs, and concerns related to family violence and child maltreatment.

Suzanne knows that kids thrive when they have a loving relationship with both of their parents. Even though kids don't get to choose who they live with, Suzanne believes that children have an important perspective and listens carefully to their concerns.

Drawing on the lessons she learnt from her years in the courtroom and working with families dealing with divorce and child custody, Suzanne now focuses on four main areas: parenting coordination for parents in family court; serving as a guardian ad litem to ensure children's interests are protected in tough custody cases; representing kids and adults to obtain protection from domestic violence; and giving advice to parents who don't have attorneys but want to learn more about child custody and family court, including court-ordered mediation.

Suzanne also enjoys consulting with attorneys who represent parents in contested custody cases. As a frequent speaker at national conferences on children's advocacy and child custody, and the author of articles and blogs on family court, Suzanne cherishes every opportunity to help make family court a more child-centered space. She actively collaborates with colleagues to present webinars on these topics.

Suzanne is the mom of two grown daughters and lives in Raleigh with her husband. When she’s not at work, you can find her exploring new places, catching up with family, taking her dog, Max, for a stroll, hitting the tennis courts with a friend, or simply relaxing and enjoying a good movie.
